The Man Trap

A U.S.S. Enterprise landing party, delivering medical supplies to M-113, encounters a shape-changing "vampire" that completely drains bodies of their salt. This debut episode sets the tone for the rest of the series: delving into the personal lives of the crew.

The Enterprise encounters a force field that transforms a crewman into an all-powerful creature seething with energy. Kirk struggles with the realization that he must kill his friend in order to save his crewmates. This episode was orginally filmed as the second pilot.

The Naked Time

While transporting a group of scientists, the Enterprise landing party is infected by a disease that causes the ship's crew to lose all inhibitions. This episode has great comic overtones, but also exposes the innermost thoughts and feelings of the crew. Watch for the first appearance of Lieut. Kevin Riley, who comandeers the ship and entertains with Irish tunes from the old country. Also in this episode, the first glimpse of the Jeffries tube, named after art director Matt Jeffreies.

A bizarre transporter malfunction splits Kirk into two beings--one good, one evil--who battle for control of the Enterprise. Spock's first use of the Vulcan nerve pinch.

Interplanetary hustler Harry Mudd transports aboard with three gorgeous women, who become pawns when the Enterprise has to obtain dilithium crystals. In the first of two show-stealing appearances, Roger C. Carmel delights in the persona of Harcourt Fenton Mudd, 23rd century con artist.

What Are Little Girls Made Of?

While on the planet Exo III, Kirk discovers a scientist who has learned to create android duplicates--including one of Kirk himself. This episode affords a rare glimpse into the private past of Nurse Chapel, who was once engaged to Dr. Roger Korby. Also, the first mention of Kirk's brother, George Samual Kirk.

An Enterprise landing party beams down to a plantet that appears to be inhabited by children, but who in fact turn out to be more than 300 years old. This haunting script is a spin on the Peter Pan fable about children who never grow up.

While delivering supplies to a penal colony on Tantalus V, Kirk is shocked to discover the colony's director is using a deadly device to control the prisoners. The first time we see the Vulcan mind-meld.

The Corbomite Manuever

The Enterprise is locked in a tractor beam by a vessel whose commander is seen as a fearsome alien on the starship's viewscreen. A great script with a simple moral: Appearances can be deceiving.

The Enterprise's original commander, Capt. Pike, is transported aboard the Enterprise, and Spock comandeers the ship and steers it to Talos IV, a planet outside Federation jurisdiction. This Hugo Award winning episode makes use of footage shot for the original pilot "The Cage." Spock becomes the first crew member to be court martialed.

The Conscience of the King

An interstellar Shakespearean troupe is to be transported to its next engagement by the Enterprise, although Kirk is convinced the leader is a notorious political figure. Revenge for war crimes and mass murder fuels Kirk's obsession with uncovering the real identity of the troupe leader. The clever juxtaposition of Shakespearean themes, incorporating passages from "Hamlet" and "Macbeth," makes this drama a standout.

Balance of Terror

Conflict between the Romulans and the Federation turns into a galactic cat-and-mouse game after the Romulans attack Outpost 4, which guards the neutral zone between the two territories. First appearance of the Romulans (whose features are surprisingly close to those of the Vulcans), the Romulan Bird-of-Prey and its cunning cloaking device. Spock confronts the distrust and open hostility of Lieut. Stiles, whose family had fought the Romulans, and Kirk becomes the first captain to preform a shipboard wedding.

Shore Leave

While on shore leave on an idyllic, Earth-like planet, Kirk and the Enterprise crew discover that having your every wish come true can have disastrous consequences. An Alice in Wonderland fantasy episode with a mix of humorous hits and well-timed shocks. McCoy becomes the first regular crew member to be resurrected from the dead.

Spock and a landing party have to fend for themselves after crash-landing the shuttle on the planet Taurus II--just when they lose all contact with the Enterprise. When Spock's ability to command the same respect as the captain comes into question, the first officer abandons his Vulcan logic and makes an emotional decision that saves the lives of his shipmates, changing the crew's perception of him from that of a cold-blooded scientist to a capable leader. Excellent confrontation scenes between Spock and McCoy. First use of the Enterprise shuttle craft.

The Squire of Gothos

A foppish man named Trelane captures the Enterprise and then transports Kirk and three others to his own world for his personal amusement. Another whimsical episode, revisiting the notion of a powerful, child-like alien. Trelane, who briefly puts Kirk on trial for treason, would become an entertaining 23rd century precursor to Q, chief mischief-maker of the 24th century.

Arena

An unseen entity transports both Kirk and the commander of the lizard-like Gorns to a barren world where they are forced into battle using makeshift weapons. Alone, Kirk is forced to use his own deductive reasoning to resolve the battle with the Gorn.

Tomorrow is Yesterday

After being hurled back to Earth's orbit, circa 1960's, the Enterprise is identified as a UFO by an Air Force pilot, forcing Kirk and Sulu to beam down to Earth to retrieve the photographic evidence. This is the first episode to place the Star Trek characters in a modern-day Earth setting--and with comedic results.

Kirk is charged with negligence for the accidental death of crewman Finney. Kirk is under intense personal scrutiny as he defends his record to salvage his career. Great insight into the senior officers' unswerving loyalty to Kirk. Not surprisingly, Spock's unwavering Vulcan logic saves the day and frees Kirk of the wrongful charges, must to the surprise of the exasperated McCoy.

The Return of the Archons

Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy beam down to Beta III, where they find a 1890's western-style town inhabited by placid Betans, living under the control of the dictatorial Landau--actually a computer--who has eradicated individual thought.

After the discovery of the sleeper ship S.S. Botany Bay, it's discovered that its crew--who are still on-board in suspended animation--are super-smart, super-strong individuals from the late 20th century, the products of genetic engineering. Here we meet the formidable Khan Noonian Singh, who would later return in 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.'

A Taste of Armageddon

Kirk and a landing party discover a strange world on the planet Eminiar VII: two societies are at war, but instead of engaging in physical battle, each commands thousands of its citizens to voluntarily go to their deaths.

This Side of Paradise

The Enterprise investigates a group of Federation colonists long presumed dead. Instead, they find the colonists in perfect health, courtesy of spores on the planet that strip away negative emotions and leave people in a state of bliss. This is Spock's show, as the Vulcan gives in to human pleasure for the first time.

Devil in the Dark

The chief engineer of a mining planet demands that Kirk and Spock dispose of the rock-like creature that is systematically killing the miners. In the tunnel, when Spock begs for him to kill the Horta, Kirk's humanity prohibits him from destroying what he cannot yet understand. Pressed into service, McCoy barks: "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!"

Errand of Mercy

An Enterprise away team and a Klingon contingent land on the complacent planet Organia at the same time. This episode first reveals the warlike nature of the Klingon Empire.

The Alternative Factor

City on the Edge of Forever

In perhaps the best-known 'Star Trek' episodes, Dr. McCoy goes temporarily insane and transports himself to a planet where he leaps through a time portal--forcing Kirk and Spock to follow after him. It also won a Hugo Award and incorporates time-traveling and great footage of the Brooklyn Bridge and New York in the 1930's.

Operation--Annihiliate

After his brother Sam dies of a mysterious ailment on the planet Deneva, Kirk discovers amoeba-like creatures that infiltrate a victim's nervous system and cause insanity. His nephew, Peter, is left orphaned after the disease takes both of his parents. This season finale is a race against time for McCoy to find a cure and a time for Kirk to face the knowledge he must destroy a planet if they can't find a cure.
